The City of Girard Fire Department welcomes you to our city. The Girard Fire Department is the oldest fire department in Crawford County, having been formed in 1871. Throughout the years, the fire department has seen many advances, as well as a complete new standard of firefighting and service delivery. The Girard Fire Department is known everywhere as a very aggressive -yet progressive -fire department in Kansas.

The fire department today is classified as a combination fire department. Meaning we have full-time firefighters, as well as volunteer firefighters. The fire station is manned 24-7 / 365 days per year. On-duty staff keep up on the needed duties, fire inspections, equipment maintenance, and respond to emergencies. The on-duty driver/firefighters work 24-hour shifts. Some of the best and latest technology of firefighting equipment is used by the department.

Beyond the obvious fire department suppression, the fire department also provides fire responder medical in cooperation with the Crawford County Ambulance Service. Members are certified to the EMT level. Extrication and light rescue capabilities are also provided by members of the department, public fire education and prevention activities are given year round, CO detection, fire extinguisher classes are given to many companies in the city, as well as the schools -along with testing, flushing, and some maintenance of the fire hydrant system.

The department conducts annual memorial services, MDA fundraising, annual awards banquet, and many other events during the year. This would include many fundraising events during the fall festival and 4th of July celebration.

Since the fire service has changed so much from days past, volunteer firefighters and full-time firefighters are required to attend regular scheduled training classes twice per month. There is also a lot of services we give to the city that are out of the usual realm of firefighting, such as our Girard Christmas Parade.

To become a volunteer firefighter, with the fire department, takes a lot of dedication and time. The department is always looking for firefighters that are willing to give of their time and effort. Minimum age is 18 years for all firefighters. Contact the fire department if you believe you might be interested. If you would like a tour of the new fire station, for you or your family, stop by anytime.

There is NO open burning within the City Limits of Girard. If you want to burn outside, it must be from the hours of 1pm to 7pm, and it must be contained inside a non-combustible container with a mesh screen on top and someone must be in attendance while it is burning.

To report a fire, or medical emergency, please dial 911. If you need information, please visit the fire department at 116 North Ozark, next to City Hall. Or, call 724-6216. Welcome to the City of Girard, visit our Website again.
